Design Description

I have chosen to celebrate Amy Johnson through my own love of woven textiles from the region over which which she flew. The design is inspired by traditional Kilim Rugs which are produced by women in homes from the Balkans all the way to Pakistan. Each one is different and provides wonderful insight into individual creativity and style which crosses over several national borders uniting this region through textiles. These rugs were never originally meant for commercial use so they have a freedom and bravery in their use of colour and pattern not dissimilar from that displayed by Amy when she chose to defy convention and fly to Australia!!

Artist Statement

Liz Ibbett is a Textile Designer currently based in London. Her work combines traditional slow production methods with contemporary design.
