38 – A Jewel in Hull’s Crown
Artist: Vicky O’Grady
Sponsor: ARCO Ltd
Location: Waverley Street, HU1 2SH
About the Design:
A Jewel in Hull’s Crown celebrates the relationship between French designer Elsa Schiaparelli and Amy Johnson, who she chose as her muse and for whom she styled a practical and stylish wardrobe for her solo flight to Cape Town.
The artist wanted to convey Amy’s status as a strong female role model in a male dominated arena by showing, as well as her engineering prowess, that she was also feminine. The jewels on the moth represent Amy’s plane and her everlasting legacy.
About the Artist:
After a long break from the art scene, a close family bereavement returned Vicky to creating pieces and reaffirmed her passion and love of painting. She explains that painting has given her a positive outlet for her grief and a fresh way to express emotions.
Vicky’s work gives her a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction and she welcomes the opportunity to pass on enjoyment of her work to others.
